Introduction
Qatar, strategically positioned at the intersection of Asia and Europe, and within a four-hour flight to the east coast of Africa, has leveraged its geographic advantages alongside its oil and gas wealth to propel societal development. Since gaining independence in 1971, Qatar has initiated numerous sustainable projects stemming from diverse research initiatives, which are prominently showcased in this book.
Sustainability is a crucial focus area aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This book elucidates how sustainability has been seamlessly integrated into various sectors to address the pressing challenges posed by rapid urbanization and climate change. Among advanced applied technologies featured are innovative solutions such as air-conditioned open spaces, including stadiums and parks, designed to enhance public comfort in extreme climates. The book also discusses marine conservation initiatives, including turtle conservation, the creation of artificial reefs and nurseries and coral restoration efforts. Other notable examples include smart technologies aimed at ensuring food and water security, health applications and specialized projects related to the oil and gas industry.
The primary aim of this book is to disseminate knowledge about innovative applied technologies currently available or anticipated to emerge soon. It uniquely illustrates how a small country in a challenging region has rapidly advanced in green technologies. The book emphasized the development of a sustainable framework that not only meets current needs but also safeguard resources for future generations.
In summary, the book provides a comprehensive and multifaceted approach to sustainability as an example for countries in the region. Its unique features emphasize practical applications, interdisciplinary collaboration and a long-term sustainable vision making it a valuable resource for scholars, practitioners, and anyone interested in sustainable development.
