Theme Tracks
The conference also has subthemes, identified to reflect the newest challenges and accomplishments with respect to student learning. The subthemes focusing our discussions will consist of: Academic Success; Assessment/Student Learning; Course/Curriculum Design/Redesign; Engaging and Motivating Students; Innovative Pedagogical Approaches; Online Learning and Teaching; Service/Experiential Learning; and Teaching Well with Classroom Technologies.
Innovative Pedagogical Approaches
Innovative pedagogy is the study of being an innovative educator or the process of innovative education/teaching. Innovative pedagogy as a science and practice has a responsibility to prepare citizens of the knowledge society who are able to be creative, face changes, manage and analyze information, and work with knowledge. Worldwide schools and educators are in various state of reform to adapt their instructional practices and educational systems to be more effective.
The Innovative Models & Pedagogical Approaches track will explore new and emerging learning models, such as competency-based education, self-paced learning, badging, adaptive learning, gamification, MOOCs, and more.
Online Learning and Teaching;
While the world of online education is exciting for its potential to reach students individually, the tools available for teachers to use are rapidly changing. As a result, it is important to consider what techniques have already been implemented with pedagogical success through particular online learning tools. This will save teachers’ time and frustration, as they cannot possibly implement every technique. The world of online education is exciting for its potential to reach students individually, but what teaching techniques can do this?
This track will explore online teaching and learning practices to help educators to develop a working understanding of successful online education involving teaching and learning strategies that can be applied in their own practices. Integrating online technologies into teaching can be challenging prospect and it can be difficult to know how to approach it effectively for the benefits of both students and educator themselves. This will give understanding of how online technologies enhance course design and the opportunity to develop faculty’s understanding of effective online teaching practices and their relationship to the use of different technologies.
Assessment/Student Learning
Student learning/assessment is integral to knowing steps one should take to improve the quality of instruction, courses, and programs, and there are a range of practices that can be employed to determine if students are achieving your program’s student learning outcomes. This Teaching and Learning Conference provides an interdisciplinary opportunity for faculty, administrators, and assessment specialists to ask questions and share best practices regarding learning outcomes assessment with colleagues across campus. Topics will likely include how to write measurable learning outcomes, strategies for performing assessment in programs of varying sizes, how grades are different than outcomes assessment, creating rubrics and using other measurement instruments, statistical topics (such as inter-rater reliability), and how to make the most of your findings. This track will provide insights into the assessment practices of students learning to cover a wide range of topics related to assessment and learning.
Faculty Development
Building interdisciplinary connections and communities of practice was indicated as an important new direction to address through faculty development. Interdisciplinary collaboration may involve a variety of types of connections, such as working on a research or teaching project from a multidisciplinary perspective or incorporating service learning into academic experiences. This track will explore faculty development practices across institutions which can identify the key challenges and pressures facing faculty members and their institutions, and what they see as potential new directions for the field of faculty development. What, then, are the issues that faculty development programs, services, and resources will likely need to address in years to come?
Engaging and Motivating Students
Motivating students is one of the major challenges teachers face on a daily basis. Motivation and engagement play a large role in students’ interest and enjoyment of school. Understandably, both also play huge roles in academic achievement. Consequently, those students who are motivated by and engaged in learning tend to perform considerably higher academically and are better behaved than unmotivated and un-engaged peers. While much motivation is intrinsic to the student, teachers also play a vital role in the motivation and engagement of their students. A significant portion of student engagement and achievement has been explained by teacher- and classroom-level variables. Therefore, the purpose of this track is to explore educators’ engagement and motivating practices as it affects students learning across colleges. This learning track will cover the important topic of engaging and motivating students in teaching and learning environments. In addition, this track will cover the impact technology such as video, blogs, courseware, mobile tools, and lecture capture has on student engagement.
Service/Experiential Learning
Experiential learning is a process through which students develop knowledge, skills, and values from direct experiences outside a traditional academic setting. Experiential learning encompasses a variety of activities including internships, service learning, undergraduate research, study abroad, and other creative and professional work experiences. Well-planned, supervised and assessed experiential learning programs can stimulate academic inquiry by promoting interdisciplinary learning, civic engagement, career development, cultural awareness, leadership, and other professional and intellectual skills. The Service learning/Experiential learning track will explore how educators have been able to affect teaching and learning process through experiential learning experience and many more.
Academic Success
Academic success should be looked like a total transformative experience. An individual’s education must not be limited to improving test results but should be encompassing. The challenge that remains is to create these transformations and it is the duty of teachers and our institutions to assume responsibility for the holistic development of a student. This track will explore approaches of educators towards increased learning outcomes.
Teaching Well with Classroom Technologies
The accelerating proliferation of technology in the classroom has altered traditional learning models and the requirements of students. Today’s students expect and look forward to using technology like laptops and iPads in the classroom. Schools must realize that in order to capture the attention of today’s tech-savvy students and properly prepare them for a successful future, they must incorporate classroom technology into their teaching. Although the students are obviously the most enthusiastic ones about using their beloved mobile devices on school wireless networks, there are many teachers that are just as excited about incorporating them into their lessons. Mobile devices like iPads, laptops, and smart phones have become a very effective tool for teaching, planning, and organizing. Students and teachers alike love their mobile devices!
The Teaching Well with Classroom Technologies track will explore how educators have been able to introduce new technologies into their teaching and learning process showcasing the success and challenges recorded and more. In addition, speakers in the Teaching Well with Classroom Technology track will discuss the use of technology in the classroom and course redesign, including the integration of courseware, lecture capture, video, mobile solutions, polling, and labs.
Course/Curriculum Design/Redesign
Design and redesign of curriculum and course involves college/school and department administrators and faculty to re-align college programs. This is done considering how colleges/universities might prepare learners for the workforce and for a lifetime of learning, provide opportunities for experiential learning and go beyond the current curriculum and experiment with new learning models. This track will explore the course/curriculum design/redesign practices across institutions to identify best practices or present new ways to present course materials.
