Abstract

Recent advancements in metabolic engineering offer promising solutions to critical challenges in agriculture, nutrition, and sustainability. This study investigates novel strategies to manipulate plant metabolic pathways, aiming to boost crop yield, improve nutritional quality, enhance stress tolerance, and increase the production of valuable compounds. Our research highlights advancements in optimizing photosynthetic efficiency, nutrient utilization, and resilience to environmental stresses through targeted metabolic interventions. Utilizing synthetic biology and multi-gene trait stacking, we demonstrate their potential to revolutionize crop enhancement. Through integration of omics technologies and advanced computational modeling, precise metabolic engineering designs have been developed. Furthermore, we explore the application of CRISPR/Cas9 and other gene editing techniques in refining plant metabolism and leveraging plants as biofactories for pharmaceutical and industrial compounds. Addressing regulatory and biosafety considerations associated with genetically modified crops, our study provides a comprehensive perspective on their role in future agricultural systems. This research underscores the transformative impact of metabolic engineering on enhancing food security, adapting to climate change, and sustainably producing valuable compounds, while outlining key challenges and future directions in this dynamic field.
